The City of Alhambra is inviting the public to review and provide comment on the Draft Housing Element, beginning August 26, 2021. The document guides the City's plans for housing and outlines important aspects like future housing needs, different housing types, zoning, and policies that can make housing more affordable and more available. The City has been updating the Housing Element as part of its General Plan. The public can get involved and provide feedback on the Draft Housing Element until September 26, 2021. Be sure to watch for announcements on the project’s webpage for information and public engagement here: https://www.alhambrahousingelement.com/get-involved.
The City will host a second community workshop to provide more information about the public comment period on September 8, 2021 at 6pm. The workshop will include an overview of the Draft Housing Element 2021-2029 update, instructions for how to provide feedback, and the next steps in the process. You can register for the event on the project website: https://www.alhambrahousingelement.com/.
The Housing Element is NOT a mandate to build new housing – it is a requirement to plan for housing. The State told the City of Alhambra that it must zone capacity for 6,825 new housing units over these 8-years, and the City is in the process of figuring out how and where to put this housing capacity. This capacity must address both market rate and affordable housing need. The City is working on creating new programs and strategies to ensure that these new housing units meet the identified needs of all community members.
To inform and engage the community on this project, the City has hosted a community workshop, a community survey, a housing element town hall event, and a Planning Commission meeting that the community was invited to attend. If you missed any of these engagement opportunities, you can visit https://www.alhambrahousingelement.com/ and click on the “Get Involved” tab to find meeting recordings and other information.
