Smoke Test to Detect Sewer Leaks

Map shows Zone 18, location of the smoke testing for residents

The City of Alhambra has contracted National Plant Services (NPS) to conduct smoke tests as part of an on-going program to detect leaks within the sewer system. An important task of the testing will be to locate breaks and defects in the sewer system.

The work is anticipated to begin on July 27 and is expected to be completed within 12 to 15 days. NPS crews will be working on the south side of the City. The inspections will take place from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Under normal circumstances, the smoke that will be generated to conduct these tests should not enter your house if the plumbing is working properly. You will see smoke coming from the vents of the roof of your home, which is normal. In most cases, entrance of smoke into a dwelling is through fixtures that are not routinely used; therefore, please run water for a minute or two at all your fixtures to ensure that all traps are full of water.

If smoke does enter your house, you should report it immediately to the crews conducting the tests in your neighborhood who will do a quick inspection of your residence to locate the problem area in your plumbing. Opening of doors and windows should quickly dissipate any smoke. If you are not home and discover smoke when you return, simply open a few windows to vent the area.

The smoke that is being used is made specifically for this application and is therefore, non-toxic and non-staining. Please accept our apologies for any inconvenience this may cause and our thanks for your assistance. If you should have any questions regarding these tests, please feel free to contact National Plant Services at 562-896-1439.

IMPORTANT! If there is any individual in your home or business who has respiratory problems or is immobile, please notify Dallas Dahl - 626-570-3280.
