SPECIAL ACTIVITIES

August 2010 

• Thursday, August 26 - Newport Beach Senior Outing - 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Newport Beach, and world-famous Balboa Island, don't give away any "excitement" points to any other beach in California, so your day there will feature unexcelled sunning, strolling, shopping and eating (on your own). And maybe you can fit in a visit to the Balboa Fun Zone for rides on the waterfront Ferris Wheel, playing games in the arcade, renting a bike for a local spin around town, or touring the nautical museum. • Monday, September 13 - Grandparent's Day Luncheon Celebration - 11 a.m. Grandparent's Day is an honor and celebration for every senior who has made a difference in a younger person's life. • Wednesday, September 15 - Los Angeles County Fair  - 10:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. A great end-of-summer tradition, the LA County Fair offers entertaining shows, exhibits, vendors, food (on your own) and more. • Thursday, September 20 - Oktoberfest in Huntington Beach - 9:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Old World Festival Hall, in Huntington Beach, is the site for this traditional fall fest, complete with a live  German band during lunch (lunch included in your fee) .  Browsing through quaint shops, especially the Euro Market Bakery & Deli (even after lunch) will top off an exciting day. • Wednesday, September 22 - Autumn Gala - 3 p.m.-6 p.m. Put on your dancing shoes and strut your stuff at the Joslyn Center! Enjoy afternoon filled with live music and dancing. Dinner will be served. • Wed. & Thurs., Sept. 22 & 23 - AARP Driver Safety Program - 12:30 p.m. -4:30 p.m. Register for this 4-hour refresher course, sponsored by the AARP and accepted by AAA Insurance and Hartford Insurance for a discount. This course is only for those who have proof of previously taking the two-day course. Fee: $12 (AARP member) or $14 (Non-AARP member). Make check or money order payable to AARP (no cash please). Class may be cancelled due to low registration.

• Tuesday, October 12 - Senior Outing to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art - 11 a.m.-5 p.m. See the permanent collections, as well as special exhibitions, including Thomas Eakins' "Manly Pursuits" exhibition. Fee: $12 (Register on Tuesday, September 7). • Wednesdays, October 13 - November 17 - Vitas Bereavement Support Group - 1 p.m.-2:30 p.m. VITAS Innovative Hospice Care will hold a free 6-week course on grief issues. Topics will vary each week. Register in advance, by calling (626) 570-5056, during weekday business hours, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

• Wednesday, October 27 - Snowline Orchard Apple Farm Tour - 9:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. The historical Snowline Orchard Apple Farm has been operating in Oak Glen for 113 years. Your visit will include a 45-minute tour (at the end of which each participant receives an apple!), and you'll get a chance to press and taste cider. Lunch (included in the $20 fee) will be at law's Oak Glen Coffee Shop, and will include either soup or salad, a choice between three entrees, and pie and ice cream. • Friday, October 29 - Halloween Lunch Celebration - 10:30 a.m. Trick or Treat! Join in the fun as we share lunch and goodies with our little neighbors from the Children's Montessori. • Wednesday, November 10 - Getty Center Senior Outing - 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Visit the Getty Center Museum where the building and garden are works of art. The museum houses collection of Western Art which include European paintings, drawings, scuptures, and decorative arts. Enjoy lunch (on your own) at one of the cafes on site or bring a bagged lunch to enjoy in the picnic area.  Fee: $12 (Register on Tuesday, October 5). • Wednesday, November 17 - Ontario Mills & Rainforest Cafe - 9:30 a.m.-4:30 a.m. Experience the Rainforest Cafe Safari! Enjoy a lovely lunch with your choice of four different entrees and a dessert. After lunch you can go shopping at the Ontario Mills Outlets. Cost of ticket ($30) includes lunch. • Thursday, December 16 - Hometown Buffet & Huntington Harbor Cruise of Lights - 1:30 p.m. - 8 p.m. The outing will begin wiht a meal at Hometown Buffet (on your own). Dress warm for our narrated boat tour through the waterways of Huntington Harbor. View hundreds of brightly decorated homes, docks, decks and boats ready for a festive holiday season. • Thursday, December 23 - Holiday Brunch Celebration - 9:30 a.m. Come together with friends and celebrate the holiday season. Keep your eyes open for a jolly visitor in red.
