  September 13-17 - National Adult Education and Family Literacy Week - Special events will include the Literacy Center "Open House" on Tuesday, September 14. Make your way to the library's second floor and head west to the Literacy Center. A visit to the open house will earn you entry into a drawing for prizes! At noon, there will be a Tutoring Discussion, including tutoring successes, new tutoring materials, and give visitors the "inside scoop" on what it is really like to be a tutor. Bring your own lunch and Alhambra Literacy will provide the drink and dessert. Then, on Saturday, September 18, Alhambra Literacy will host a special "Story, Game & Craft Program." No registration is required, but with limited seating, the door will be closed after the arrival of the 75th attendee. For more information, call 626-570-3281.

 
  Monday, September 13 - "Happy Birthday," Roald Dahl! - 5:30 p.m. in Ruth C. Reese Hall.  Come help us celebrate the 94th anniversary of Roald Dahl's birthday, which will include a special screening of one of Dahl's classics - "The Witches" and the kick-off of the Dahlathon Reading Program.   Tuesday, September 14 - December 31 - Children's "Dahlathon" Reading Program - If you can't get enough of Roald Dahl's works, stop by the Children's Room to find out how you can earn prizes for reading your favorite Dahl stories. For ages 7-12. For more information, call 626-570-3215.

  Tuesday, September 14 - Book Discussion with Author Randy Jurado Ertll - 7 p.m. Ertll will discuss (and sign) his book, entitled Hope in TImes of Darkness: A Salvadoran American Experience. Ertll, who was raised in South-Central L.A., and also lived in Minnesota and Washington D.C., has observed how minority you, in impoverished areas, can succeed in life and become productive citizens of our society. Ertll is the personification of that belief. He has worked for Congressman Hilda Solis in Washington, written opinion columns in the Los Angeles Times and other newspapers, interviewed frequently on national networks, and is currently serving as the Executive Director of "El Centro de Accion Social" in Pasadena. In his book, he focuses on social justice issues and contends that government, community-based organizations, elected officials, and community leaders can help create hope and opportunities for our youth, and thereby help improve our society. His hope is to inspire and motivate youth to believe in their own potential and to achieve success through knowledge and educational opportunities. The book, will be available for $20. All Alhambra residents are encouraged to attend this free program.

Wireless Access Procedures at Civic Center Library Updated - An Alhambra Civic Center Library card is now required to access the library's wireless service. Information concerning how to access the service is available at all service desks. A Civic Center Library card is free, but must be obained at the library, 101 South First Street. When applying for a card, please bring along a photo I.D. and current proof of your address.

Become a Literacy Volunteer! The library is seeking volunteers who are interested in assisting someone achieve their literacy goals, whether it is to be able to read to their children, study for the GED, or get a better job. Call (626) 570-3281 if you would like more information on becoming a literacy volunteer and/or if you know someone who needs assistance in improving their basic English reading and writing skills. 
 
 Become a Friend! - Apply for membership in the Friends of the Alhambra Public Library organization for just $5 per year for seniors and students; $100 for a lifetime membership). 
You can also become a Friends volunteer--processing books for the library on Tuesdays
and Fridays from 9 a.m. to noon. The Friends Book Store, located inside the library, offers
used books at very resonable prices. Money earned from the purchase of these books
is used to support a variety of programs, equipment and materials for the library.

We the People "A More Perfect Union" Bookshelf! This new collection of classic books for young readers from Kindergarten through high school seeks to encourage an understanding of ideas through different stories that are part of American history and culture.  This year’s theme, “A More Perfect Union,” is in honor of the 150th anniversary of the Civil War.  Don’t forget to stop by the library and check out some of the titles on our new bookshelf!

Homework HELP

The Homework HELP program provides assistance to students in grades K through 12th.  The assistance is provided by high school volunteers. Regular hours are Monday through Thursday, from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. It is not available on Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Holidays and during the summer.  For a complete schedule, please inquire at the Children’s or Teen Reference Desks.  Homework Help assistance is given on a drop-in, first-come, first-serve basis.  No registration is required.  Questions can be directed to (626) 570-3215 ext. 5620 or ext. 5608.
