Wednesday, March 3 - Spanish Language Book Club - 7:00 p.m. - 8:30 pm. Experience the best of Latin American literature with us. We meet the first and third Wednesday of each month. This evening we will be meeting in the Conference Room, located on the second floor. We will continue discussing the book El viajero del Siglo, by Andrés Newman.   Monday, March 8 - Sunday, March 21 -- Lottery for April & May Children's Painting Classes. The classes, Beginning Painting (ages 5-10) & Mixed Media (ages
10-14), are sponsored by the Alhambra City Arts and Cultural Events Committee. They will be held in the Children’s Room during the weeks of
April 12 – May 10. Beginning Painting will be held on Mondays from 6:00-7:15 pm and Mixed Media will be held on Tuesdays from 6:30-7:45 pm. Due to limited space, class spots will be assigned by lottery and interested parties must come in person to pick up a lottery ticket in the Children’s Room.  Those whose names are drawn will be notified by phone to return and fill out an application.

 
  Tuesday, March 9 - "Mortgage Seminar" with Alhambra real estate agent Lee Lieberg - 2 p.m. Discussion will include options available to those who are "underwater" on their mortgages and having trouble making payments. Discussion is free and open to the public; registration is not necessary.

Saturday, March 13 through mid-April - "Big Read Program" - This program, designed to advance literacy by promoting a great work of literature, kicks off with a special program featuring "The Joy Luck Club" by noted California author Amy Tan.
The Big Read Program will begin at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 13 with a "Big Read" Kick-Off and Reception. The public is invited for a performance by the Los Angeles Classical Chinese Orchestra, followed by a "Big Read" reception.

Mondays, April 12 - May 10 - "Beginning Painting Class for Children (ages 5 to 10) with Carlos Durazo" - 6:00 p.m.-7:15 p.m. Children will learn the basics of painting, using acrylic paints, and will complete at least one project. In June, one piece of each student's artwork will be displayed in the Alhambra City Hall Art Gallery. Program is free, but space is limited. Registration will be through a lottery, to be held from Monday, March 8 through Sunday, March 21.

 
Tuesdays, April 13 - May 11 - "Painting and Mixed Media for Children (ages 10 to 14) with Libby Ellis - 6:30 p.m.-7:45 p.m. Children will experiment will mixed media and collage to create one-of-a-kind masterpieces that will get them thinking about art in a whole new way. During the 5-week course, participants will complete at least one project, and in June, one piece of each student's artwork will be displayin the Alhambra City Hall Art Gallery. Program is free, but space is limited. Registration will be through a lottery, to be held from Monday, March 8 through Sunday, March 21.

Become a Literacy Volunteer! The library is seeking volunteers who are interested in assisting someone achieve their literacy goals, whether it is to be able to read to their children, study for the GED, or get a better job. Call (626) 570-3281 if you would like more information on becoming a literacy volunteer and/or if you know someone who needs assistance in improving their basic English reading and writing skills. 
 
 Become a Friend! - Apply for membership in the Friends of the Alhambra Public Library organization for just $5 per year for seniors and students; $100 for a lifetime membership). 
You can also become a Friends volunteer--processing books for the library on Tuesdays
and Fridays from 9 a.m. to noon. The Friends Book Store, located inside the library, offers
used books at very resonable prices. Money earned from the purchase of these books
is used to support a variety of programs, equipment and materials for the library.

Homework HELP

- The Homework HELP program provides assistance to students in grades K through 12th.  The assistance is provided by high school volunteers. Regular hours are Monday through Thursday, from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. It is not available on Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Holidays and during the summer.  For a complete schedule, please inquire at the Children’s or Teen Reference Desks.  Homework Help assistance is given on a drop-in, first-come, first-serve basis.  No registration is required.  Questions can be directed to (626) 570-3215 ext. 5620 or ext. 5608.
