Tips on Saying "NO" to Drugs, Alcohol and Tobacco

What to do if someone offers you drugs or alcohol:

  • Say, "No." It takes courage to do what's right.
  • Change the subject.
  • Suggest other activities such as sports or games
  • Walk away and report the incident to a trusted adult.

   If you find drugs:

  • NEVER touch them.
  • Leave the area.
  • If an adult is present, call the Police.

If a friend is using drugs:

  • Talk to the friend and try to help them by telling him/her about the dangers of using drugs.
  • Encourage the friend to talk to his/her parents or to a trusted adult.

Tips for parents on drug use:

  • Talk to your child about the real risks of using drugs, alcohol and tobacco. If you are having a hard time getting started, you can get a copy of Keeping Youth Drug Free from the National Clearinghouse for Alcohol and Drug Information 1-800-729-6686 or go to www.health.org.
  • Make parenting a priority. Make rules for your child and enforce them. Adapt the rules as needed as your child gets older and more independent.
  • Know who your child's friends are and get to know the parents or their caregivers.
  • Watch for signs of stress in your child and help him/her to learn how to deal with stress.
  • Educate yourself to the different kinds of drugs, their use, and short- and long-term consequences.
  • Talk to your child's teacher, counselor or principal about recommended alcohol, tobacco and drug programs and materials.
