The City of Alhambra annually holds a bike safety rally to teach youngsters safe bike & pedestrian safety rules.

Bike & Pedestrian Safety Tips

Bike Safety Tips

  • Before riding on a bike, check to see that it is properly maintained. Keep it clean and make sure all nuts and bolts are tight, and that the brakes work.
  • Be sure to wear a helmet helmet. It can prevent serious head injuries in case of an accident.
  • Dress to be visible. Wear proper clothes, such as neon or light-colored clothing and reflectors to make you more visible.
  • Never ride out into a street without stopping first. Use marked paths and safe areas when possible.
  • Obey all stop signs and signals.
  • Check behind before swerving, turning or changing lanes. Ride so drivers can see you and predict your movements. Never assume that they can see you. If you're in doubt of a motorist's intentions, be prepared to yield.
  • When riding a bike on the street, always ride in the same direction as the flow of vehicle traffic.
  • Watch for vehicles turning left into your path.
This is a common type of crash and can usually be
    avoided by an aware cyclist.
  • Use hand signals when turning:
-- Left: Hold your left arm straight out.
-- Right: Hold your left arm out and up in an "L" shape.
-- Stop: Hold your left arm out and down in an upside-down "L" shape.
  • Ride in a straight line. If in a group, ride single file. Don't ride double. When passing other bikers or walkers, let them know your position by shouting out, "I'm on the left (or right)."
  • Look for cars at cross streets and driveways.
  • Be alert for road hazards. Scan the road for potholes, drainage grates, puddles of water, rocks, glass, etc. Identify such hazards in time to avoid them without swerving into traffic.
  • Use caution when riding near buses. Never pass on the right, as you may get caught in the squeeze with the curb, or collide with passengers getting off the bus. Keep a safe distance behind the bus. Bus drivers must constantly scan the road for hazards, but you may be in their blind spot if you're too close.
  • Be aware of parked cars and watch out for car doors that may open. Ride at least three feet away from parked cars.
  • Ride your bike near the right-hand edge of the road.
  • Give pedestrians the right-of-way.
  • When riding at night, use headlights; be sure your bike has front and rear reflectors, pedal reflectors, and side rim or wheel reflectors. Avoid dark, narrow roadways.

Walking Safety Tips

  • Always walk on the sidewalk when one is available.
  • If there is no sidewalk, always walk facing traffic.
  • Wear bright colors! You want drivers to see you.
  • If you are walking at night wear clothes that reflect when hit by headlights.
  • Cross only at marked crosswalks or at corners. Follow the streetlight direction signs.
  • Stop and look left, then right, then left again, before you step into the street.
  • Keep looking for cars while you are crossing.
  • Walk, Don't Run.
